• Thinking Coach: How to think differently and creatively

    Thinking“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” – Albert Einstein.

    Coach: There is no secret way to think at a higher level. It doesn’t help to copy others. Even to try to think like Einstein won’t help.

    Michael: I know I could do with upgrading my thinking. So how am I to do it if I can’t imitate others?

    Coach: Well the good news is that you can upgrade your thinking. But not in the ways that most of us think. The first step is to accept that you are conditioned to see the world in a set way.

    Michael: Does this mean that how I learnt to think limits my ability?

    Coach: Yes it causes you to think in a set way. This is fine for everyday life. It helps you to be a good at what you do at work.

    Michael: That’s good. But if I want to do even better than that I need to learn how to think in a more creative way.

    Coach: Yes you need to think in a new way and to think about new things.

    The art of thinking in a new way

    Coach: When you think in a new way. It helps you to overcome the three flaws in thinking. Poor perception. Fear of failure. And the inability to persuade others.

    Michael: Do all of us have these three flaws?

    Coach: Yes unless you learn to overcome them. Would you like to learn how you can do that?

    Michael: Yes. Please tell me what I need to do.

    How to overcome the flaws in your thinking

    Coach: Your brain uses as many short-cuts as it can. It uses what it already knows and other’s opinions to get what it wants. It opts for what it expects because it is harder to see what you do not expect. Your brain is lazy. It does not push itself to look at things in a new way. It prefers to rely on the old ways.

    Michael: How do I break this bad habit?

    Coach: It helps to use it on things that it has never seen before. To travel abroad, meet new people, work in a new setting, read about new places, new people and new things.

    Michael: So this will broaden my range of reference. And stop me using short-cuts.

    Coach: When you take into new areas it can no longer use its old short cuts. This weakens the bad habit of doing so. And helps you to develop new ways to think and to look at issues.

    How to overcome your fear of thinking

    Coach: When you start to think in a new way you will feel ill at ease. You feel uncertain. You might fail. And make mistakes.

    Michael: I suppose that is to be expected.

    Coach: Yes we prefer the familiar to the unfamiliar. But when you expect this to happen you will be able to deal with it. And with a bit of resolve you can get over these fears. And go on to great things.

    Michael: So the trick is to reach out for new people, knowledge and things. To expect to be uneasy about them. And resolve to get over this uneasiness.

    Coach: Remember it is not about doing new things for the fun of it. It is about doing them to learn from. There is a world of difference in this. And some people just don’t get it. They travel abroad and read the same books. Eat the same food. And do much the same things they do at home. All of which do nothing to improve the quality of how they think.
